Job listings hide salary, wasting everyone's time
Four interview rounds, eleven hours, then an offer 40% below expectation. Both sides knew their number on day one and neither was allowed to say it.
The stated reason is "negotiation flexibility". The actual outcome is a market where nobody can price themselves.

Eleven hours across four rounds, including a take-home. The offer was 40% under. When I said so, the recruiter told me the band had "always been on the internal req" — so they knew from the first call.

The part that gets me is that it is presented as flexibility for the candidate. In practice the flexibility only runs one direction.
